ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) belongs to the genus Alligator, which is a unique crocodile in China. In order to study the macroscopic structure of the heart of Chinese alligator, we performed detailed cardiac anatomy on five specimens. The heart is in the cranial mediastinum. It is caudally involved by the liver cranial margins, and ventrally by the ribs, intercostal muscles, and sternum and dorsally by the lungs. The wild Chinese alligator heart is a typical four-chamber heart, with two (right and left) atria and ventricles, left and right aorta, pulmonary artery and subclavian artery branch from the aorta. Morphology measures the circumference (129.36 mm), weight (44.14 g), and length of the heart from apex to bottom (52.50 mm). Studies have shown that the shape of the wild Chinese alligator's heart is consistent with the anatomy of other crocodiles.


El caimán chino (Alligator sinensis) pertenece al género Alligator, que es un cocodrilo único en China. Para estudiar la estructura macroscópica del corazón del caimán chino, revisamos detalladamente la anatomía cardíaca de cinco especímenes. El corazón está en el mediastino craneal. Está limitado caudalmente por los márgenes craneales del hígado, y ventralmente por las costillas, los músculos intercostales y el esternón, y dorsalmente por los pulmones. El corazón de cocodrilo chino salvaje es un corazón típico de cuatro cámaras, con dos atrios y dos ventrículos (derecho e izquierdo), aortas izquierda y derecha, arteria pulmonar y rama de la arteria subclavia de la aorta. La morfología mide la circunferencia (129,36 mm), el peso (44,14 g) y la longitud del corazón desde el ápice hasta la base (52,50 mm). Los estudios han demostrado que la forma del corazón del caimán chino salvaje es consistente con la anatomía de otros cocodrilos.

SUMMARY: The Caiman crocodilus yacare was once close to extinction. Studies about the male reproductive tract may aid in their reproduction and conservation. In this work, after sedation and euthanasia, seven young male C. yacare were submitted to necropsy, and macroscopic evaluation of the reproductive system, while the three others were admitted for histological study. The histological sections were stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin and Masson's Trichrome. After opening the pleuroperitoneal cavity it was possible to identify that the testicles were disposed in pairs and attached to its dorsal surface. The epididymis showed elongated and convoluted shapes and were located at the cranial margin of the testicles, following its medial portion, which was the same portion that the "vas deferens" stems from until the opening of the cloaca. The crocodile phallus presented a tubular shape, with conical appearance, displaying little resistance while maintaining its flexibility, compatible with a fibrocartilaginous tissue. On light microscopic analysis it was possible to observe that the testis was delimited by the tunica albuginea. The seminiferous tubules were contorted, and the interstitial space was filled with interstitial tissue and Leydig cells. The epididymal ductus were covered with non-ciliated pseudostratified epithelium with cells varying between cuboidal and prismatic shapes. The ductus deferens were characterized by a narrow girth shrouded with non- ciliated pseudostratified prismatic epithelium. The phallus of the crocodile was covered with a non-keratinized squamous epithelium surrounded by connective tissue. The findings support anatomic and histologic knowledge Alligatoridae reproductive system, enabling further research in the C. yacare reproduction and conservation.


RESUMEN: El Caiman crocodilus yacare ha estado en peligro de extinción. Los estudios sobre el aparato reproductor del macho pueden ser de ayuda en su reproducción y conservación. En este trabajo, fueron sometidos a necropsia y evaluación macroscópica del aparato reproductor, siete machos jóvenes de C. yacare, mientras que otros tres fueron utilizados para su estudio histológico. Las secciones histológicas se tiñeron con hematoxilina y eosina y tricrómico de Masson. Después de examinar la cavidad pleuroperitoneal se pudo identificar que los testículos estaban dispuestos en pares y adheridos a su superficie dorsal. El epidídimo presentaba formas alargadas y contorneadas y se ubicaba en el margen craneal de los testículos, siguiendo su porción medial, que era la misma porción de donde parten los conductos deferentes hasta la apertura de la cloaca. El pene del cocodrilo presentaba forma tubular, de apariencia cónica, mostrando poca resistencia manteniendo su flexibilidad, compatible con un tejido fibrocartilaginoso. En el análisis microscópico óptico se pudo observar que el testículo estaba delimitado por la túnica albugínea. Los túbulos seminíferos estaban contorsionados y el espacio intersticial estaba lleno de tejido intersticial y células intersticiales (células de Leydig). El epidídimo estaba cubierto con epitelio pseudoestratificado no ciliado con células que variaban entre formas cuboideas y prismáticas. Los conductos deferentes se caracterizaron por una circunferencia estrecha envuelta en un epitelio prismático pseudoestratificado no ciliado. El pene del cocodrilo estaba cubierto con un epitelio escamoso no queratinizado rodeado de tejido conectivo. Los hallazgos corroboran el conocimiento de la anatomía del sistema reproductivo de Alligatoridae, lo que permite una mayor investigación sobre la reproducción y conservación de C. yacare.

ABSTRACT

Objetivou-se caracterizar o corte “aparas” da carcaça do jacaré-do-Pantanal quanto à composição centesimal, teor de colágeno, pH, oxidação lipídica, cor e pigmentos hemetotais (PHT). As aparas apresentaram pH médio de 5,72 e ponto isoelétrico entre 5,2 e 5,5, alto teor de água (76,08%), médio teor proteico (19,89%) e baixo teor de lipídeos (0,54%). O teor de PHT foi de 4,36 mg/g e o de colágeno total de 1,82%, sendo a fração solúvel (0,22%) e a insolúvel (1,61%). Baixo índice de TBARS (0,48 mg MAD/kg) e os índices de cor instrumental foram de 59,55 para luminosidade (L*), 62,87° tonalidade (h) e 12,19 de saturação (C*). Conclui-se que as características das aparas de jacaré são favoráveis para a elaboração de produtos com baixo teor de gordura e coloração mais clara, características da carne destes animais.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo foi realizar a descrição anatômica do esqueleto de Melanosuchus niger, com o intuito de contribuir com informações evolutivas sobre a espécie. Utilizaram-se três espécimes adultos de M. niger, com comprimento médio de 2,40m, provenientes da coleção biológica do Lapas-UFU. Na cintura peitoral, a escápula é maior do que o coracóide. Já nos elementos da cintura pelvina, o púbis não participa da formação do acetábulo, o contato com o ilío, ocorre por ligamentos, e sua articulação com o ísquio, permite movimentos dorso-ventrais. Nos membros torácicos, o úmero figura como elemento do estilopódio, a ulna e rádio como elementos do zeugopódio. No carpo há o ulnar do carpo, fusão do radial+intermédio, fusão dos distais do carpo 3+4+5 e o pisiforme; possui cinco metacarpos, numerados lateromedialmente e a fórmula falângica 2:3:4:3:2. Nos membros pelvinos, o estilopódio é formado pelo fêmur e o zeugopódio pela tíbia e fíbula. No tarso há a fusão do intermédio+central, fibular do tarso, distal do tarso 3, distal do tarso 4; possui quatro metatarsos longos I, II, III e IV, sendo os metatarsos II e III maiores que os demais. O metatarso V é um osso bastante reduzido e o pé possui a fórmula falângica 2:3:4:4. No crânio, a abertura nasal é única, o palatino, vômer, pterigóide, pré-maxila e maxila formam a estrutura óssea do palato secundário; o osso parietal é o único elemento no teto craniano. No esqueleto pós- axial em pares de costelas distintas que se articulam com as vértebras cervicais, dorsais, lombares, sacrais e caudais. A gastrália é formada por sete fileiras de ossos finos localizados entre o púbis e a região caudal do esterno.(AU)


The objective was an anatomical description of the skeleton of Melanosuchus niger, in order to contribute with evolutionary information about the species. Three adult specimens of M. niger with an average length of 2.40m were used, originating from the biologic collection of Lapas-UFU. In the forelimb, the scapula is bigger than the coracoid. Regarding the hindlimbs, the pubic does not participate in the formation of the acetabulum; the contact with the ilium is made by ligaments, and its articulation with the rump allows dorsal-ventral movements. Regarding the forelimbs, the humerus is a stylopodium element, and the ulna and radius a zeugopodium element. The carpus exibits the ulnar-radial+intermedium fusion, fusion of the distal carpals 3+4+5, and the pisiform. It has five metacarpals, numbered lateromedially as metacarpal 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The phalangeal formula is 2:3:4:3:2. Regarding the pelvic limbs, the stylopodium is formed by the femur, and the zeugopodium by tibia and fibula. In tarsus has four bones: fusion of the intermedium+centrale, fibulare, distal tarsal 3, and distal tarsal 4. It has four long metatarsals I, II, III and IV, with metatarsal II and III being relatively longer than the others. Metatarsal V is a very small bone; the feet have the phalangeal formula 2:3:4:4. At the skull, the nasal opening is only the palatine bones, vomer, pterygoid, premaxilla and maxilla forming the bone structure of the secondary palate; the parietal bone is the only element on the cranial roof. In the pos- axial skeleton ist distinct pairs of ribs which articulate with the cervical, dorsal, lumbar, sacral and caudal vertebrae. The gastralia consists of seven rows of fine bone located between the pubic bone and caudal part of the sternum.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Com este estudo objetivou-se descrever os aspectos anatômicos e histológicos do coração do jacaré-do-pantanal (Caiman yacare), proveniente de zoocriadouro. Para tanto, estudou-se 13 exemplares da espécie, os quais foram perfundidos, conservados em solução de formaldeído a 10% e submetidos às técnicas anatômicas específicas. O coração foi separado e amostras foram colhidas e submetidas à avaliação histológica. Macroscopicamente o coração é tetracavitário, e além de dois átrios e dois ventrículos, apresenta uma estrutura denominada cone arterial, do qual emergem os vasos da base do coração. Foram identificadas duas aortas, direita e esquerda, sendo que a esquerda emerge do ventrículo direito e se comunica com o tronco sistêmico direito por meio do forame de Panizza. Histologicamente o coração possui epicárdio, miocárdio e endocárdio típicos. Concluímos que a histologia do coração, no jacaré-do-pantanal, é semelhante à de outras espécies de répteis. Contudo, anatomicamente apresenta particularidades importantes, as quais representam, possivelmente, adaptações que permitiram a perpetuação da espécie.(AU)


The aim of this study was to describe anatomical and histological aspects of the heart of Caiman yacare from a crocodile breeding center. For this purpose, we have chosen and further studied 13 specimens which were perfused and preserved in a 10% formaldehyde solution and they were subjected to the specific anatomical techniques. The heart was separated and samples were collected and submitted to the specific histological procedures. Macroscopically, the heart is four-chambered and besides two atria and two ventricles, has a structure called arterial cone from which the large vessels of the heart emerge. Two aortas, left and right, were identified. The left aorta emerges from the right ventricle and communicates with the systemic trunk through the Foramen of Panizza. From a histological point of view, the heart is typically composed of epicardium, myocardium and endocardium. According to these observations, it is assumed that the histology of the heart of "Jacaré-do-Pantanal" is similar to other species of reptiles. However, there are some anatomic particularities, which possibly represent the adaptations allowing the perpetuation of the species.(AU)

O jacaré-do-pantanal (Caiman yacare) é uma espécie abundante no ecossistema do Pantanal. Sua exploração comercial está regulamentada desde 1990 e se tornou um agronegócio em expansão. Para atender essa demanda, uma unidade processadora instalada em Mato Grosso, vem comercializando carne de jacaré em diferentes cortes, entre os quais o filé de dorso, oriundo do pescoço, nos últimos quatro anos. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi descrever os músculos e correspondentes bases ósseas desse corte. Para a descrição de ossos, utilizaram-se seis carcaças desossadas de exemplares juvenis de jacaré-do-pantanal, além de um exemplar adulto obtido após morte do animal, por doação, do Zoológico da UFMT. Os ossos foram macerados em água corrente, clareados com solução de água oxigenada a 10 volumes, e seus detalhes anatômicos foram descritos. Para descrever o músculo, 24 exemplares juvenis foram obtidos após abate e esfola, conservados em freezer e descongelados quando utilizados, sem qualquer fixação. Após a evisceração, foram dissecados em ambos os antímeros, para verificação de simetria de ocorrência, fixações musculares, relacões de sintopia, forma e arquitetura muscular. Verificou-se que a coluna cervical em C. yacare apresenta nove vértebras cervicais (VC), associadas com as respectivas costelas, que servem de base principal ao filé de dorso, que é constituído pela musculatura cervical, exceto os músculos intertransversais cervicais e intercostais cervicais externos.


The yacare Caiman (Caiman yacare) is an abundant species in the Pantanal ecosystem. Commercial exploitation was regulated in 1990 and has become a thriving business. In order to fulfill this demand, a processing plant settled in Mato Grosso state, Brazil, has been supplying for the last four years different cuts of Pantanal Caiman meat, including the "filé de dorso" (back sirloin) obtained from the neck. The aim of this study was to describe the muscles and corresponding bones related to this cut. To describe the bones, we used six boned carcasses from juvenile yacare Caiman, as well as an adult specimen obtained after animal death, by donation from the Federal University of Mato Grosso Zoo. The bones were macerated in water, bleached with 10 volume-hydrogen-peroxide solution, and their anatomical details were recorded. In order to describe the muscles, 24 juvenile specimens were obtained after slaughter and skinning, preserved in a freezer at -20oC, and thawed at the time of use, without any fixation. After evisceration, the specimens were dissected on both sides to verify symmetry of structures, muscle attachments, sintopy relations, shape, and muscular architecture. The cervical spine of C. yacare features nine cervical vertebrae (CV) associated to their ribs, serving as the main base for the back sirloin cut, which is formed by neck muscles, except for the intertransverse cervical and external intercostal cervical muscles.

O consumo de carne de jacaré-do-Pantanal tornou-se uma tendência de mercado e uma cadeia produtiva em ascensão no Estado de Mato Grosso, sendo 28,40% da carne comercializada nos últimos quatro anos oriundos do tronco. Estudos evolutivos, morfofisiológicos, ontogenéticos e tecnológicos foram desenvolvidos, mas não há descrição da musculatura e bases ósseas dos cortes comerciais. Objetivou-se descrever os músculos e correspondentes bases ósseas dos cortes filé de lombo, filé mignon e aparas. Na descrição óssea, utilizaram-se seis carcaças desossadas de exemplares juvenis de jacaré-do-Pantanal, além de um exemplar adulto, obtido por doação após óbito, do Zoológico da UFMT. Os ossos foram macerados em água corrente, clareados e descritos. Para a descrição muscular, 24 exemplares juvenis foram abatidos e esfolados, conservados em freezer e descongelados quando utilizados, sem qualquer fixação. Após a evisceração, foram dissecados em ambos os antímeros. Os músculos semiespinhal, longuíssimo e iliocostal, fixados nas vértebras e costelas torácicas, lombares e sacrais, formam o filé de lombo. O corte aparas é constituído pelos músculos grande dorsal, serrátil, peitoral e abdominais (oblíquo externo, oblíquo interno, transverso e reto), cuja base óssea corresponde as costelas torácicas, lombares e sacrais, a gastrália, o esterno e o epipúbis. Por sua vez, o m. puboisquiofemoral interno cranial, localizado na região sublombar e o m. troncocaudal, da superfície ventral da pelve, compreendem o filé mignon...


Yacare Caiman meat consumption has become a marketing trend and a commodity on the rise in Mato Grosso state in Brazil. In the last four years, cuts from the trunk represented 28.40% of total meat sales. Although evolutionary studies, morphophysiological ontogenetic and technology research have been carried out, characterization of muscle and bone bases of cuts from the torso has not been previously reported. The aim of this research is to describe the muscles and corresponding bones related to sirloin, filet mignon and meat trims cuts. To describe the bones, we used six boned carcasses from juvenile Yacare Caiman, as well as an adult specimen, obtained by donation after death from the Federal University of Mato Grosso Zoo. The bones were macerated, bleached and their anatomical details recorded. In order to study the muscle, 24 juvenile specimens were obtained after slaughter and skinning and dissected on both sides. The sirloin cut consists of the semispinal, longissimus and iliocostalis muscles, which are inserted on thoracic vertebrae and ribs, as well as lumbar and sacral ribs. The meat trims cut is formed by latissimus dorsi, serratus, pectoral and abdominal (external oblique, internal oblique, transversus and rectus) muscles, based in various bones: bone ribs are the thoracic, lumbar, and sacral ribs, the gastralia, the sternum and epipúbis. The filet mignon cut is formed by the internal puboischiofemoralis cranial (sublumbar) muscle and by the troncocaudal (ventral surface of the pelvis) muscle...

A exploração comercial de jacaré-do-Pantanal (Caiman yacare) constitui importante cadeia produtiva no Estado de Mato Grosso. As características nutricionais e representatividade na massa corporal de crocodilianos tornaram a região da cauda objeto de estudos morfofisiológicos, evolutivos e tecnológicos. Como inexiste a caracterização anatômica dos músculos e ossos que constituem os cortes comerciais dessa região, objetivou-se descrever os músculos e correspondentes bases ósseas da cauda. Na descrição óssea, foram utilizados um exemplar adulto e seis juvenis. Para caracterização muscular, 24 espécimes juvenis foram conservados em freezer e dissecados a fresco, em ambos os antímeros, para verificação de simetria de ocorrência, fixações musculares, relacões de sintopia, forma e arquitetura muscular. As vértebras caudais são procélicas, exceto a primeira da série, e possuem na superfície ventral do corpo áreas para articulação com os processos hemais, exceto a primeira e as quatro ou cinco últimas. Os cortes comerciais da região são o filé de cauda, composto pelos músculos semiespinhal caudal, longuíssimo caudal, ilioisquiocaudal, caudofemoral longo, transverso e profundo da cauda, enquanto o corte ponta de cauda é constituído pelos músculos longuíssimo caudal e ilioisquiocaudal, com as cinco ou seis últimas vértebras caudais.


The commercial exploitation of the Yacare Caiman (Caiman yacare) has become a relevant commodity in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Crocodilian's tail muscles nutritional characteristics and representativeness in body mass became the object of morphophysiological technological and evolutionary studies. The aim of this research was to report, for the first time, the anatomical characterization of muscle and bone bases of Pantanal Caiman meat cuts obtained from the tail. To describe the bones, we used one adult and six juvenile specimens of Pantanal Caiman. In order to study the muscle, 24 juvenile individuals were slaughtered and skinned, preserved in a -20oC freezer and thawed at the time of use, without any fixation. After evisceration, the specimens were dissected on both sides to verify structural symmetry, muscle attachments, sintopy relations, shape and muscular architecture. Caudal vertebrae are procoelous, except for the first of the series, and have sites on the ventral surface of their body where the hemal processes articulate, with the exception of the first and the last four or five vertebrae. The commercial meat cuts of the tail are the tail sirloin, composed of semispinal caudal, longissimus caudal, ilioischiocaudal, long caudofemoral, transverse and deep of the tail muscles, and also the tail tip, consisting of the longissimus caudal and ilioischiocaudal muscles, based on the last five or six caudal vertebrae.

ABSTRACT

The American crocodile, Crocodylus acutus, is widely distributed in the American neotropics. It is endangered throughout most of its range and is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Natural Fauna and Flora (IUCN) and on Appendix I of the Convention for the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). Despite this listing, there are few published reports on population status throughout most of its range. We investigated the status of the C. acutus, at several locations along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. We carried out spotlight and nesting surveys from 2007-2009 along the Costa Rican Pacific coast in four distinct areas, coastal areas of Las Baulas (N=40) and Santa Rosa (N=9) National Parks and the Osa Conservation Area (N=13), and upriver in Palo Verde National Park (N=11). We recorded crocodile locations and standard environmental data at each observation. Encounter rates, population structure, distribution within each area and data on successful nesting (presence of hatchlings, nests, etc) were determined. We attempted to capture all crocodiles to record standard morphometrics. A total of 586 crocodiles were observed along 185.8km of survey route. The majority of animals encountered (54.9%) were either hatchlings (<0.5m) or juveniles (0.5-1.25m). The average non-hatchling encounter rate per survey for the Pacific coast was 3.1 crocodiles/km, with individual encounter rates ranging from 1.2 crocodiles/km to 4.3 crocodiles/ km in Las Baulas National Park and the Osa Conservation Area respectively. Distribution of size classes within the individual locations did not differ with the exception of Santa Rosa and Las Baulas National Parks, where hatchlings were found in water with lower salinities. These were the first systematic surveys in several of the areas studied and additional work is needed to further characterize the American crocodile population in Costa Rica.


El cocodrilo americano, Crocodylus acutus, se encuentra ampliamente distribuido en el neotrópico Americano y hay pocos estudios publicados sobre el estado de sus poblaciones en la mayor parte de su rango de distribución. Investigamos el estado del Cocodylus acutus en varias ubicaciones a lo largo de la costa del Pacífico de Costa Rica. Se realizaron muestreos nocturnos y de anidación a lo largo de la Costa Pacífica de Costa Rica en cuatro áreas en particular desde 2007-2009,’áreas costeras en los Parque Nacionales de Las Baulas (N=40) y Santa Rosa (N=9), y en el Área de Conservación de la Osa (N=13) y en el curso alto del Parque Nacional de Palo Verde (N=11). Se registraron datos de la ubicación de los cocodrilos y datos ambientales estándar en cada observación. Se determinó la tasa de encuentros, estructura de la población, distribución dentro de cada área y evidencia de anidación exitosa (presencia de neonatos, nidos, etc.). Intentamos capturar todos los cocodrilos para registrar información morfométrica estándar. En total, se observaron 586 cocodrilos a lo largo de 185.8km de ruta de muestreo. La mayoría de los animales encontrados (54.9%) fueron neonatos (<0.5m) o juveniles (0.5-1.25m). La tasa promedio de encuentros por muestreo de no-neonatos en la costa del Pacífico fue de 3.1 cocodrilos/km; con rangos de encuentro de individuos de entre 1.2 a 4.3 cocodrilos/km en el Parque Nacional de Las Baulas y el Área de Conservación Osa. La distribución por clases de tamaño no varió, a excepción de los Parques Nacionales de Santa Rosa y Las Baulas, donde se encontró a los neonatos en aguas con bajas salinidades. Estos fueron los primeros muestreos sistemáticos en varias de las áreas estudiadas y son necesarios trabajos adicionales para caracterizar las poblaciones de cocodrilo Americano en Costa Rica.

ABSTRACT

Three different reptilian species Psammophis sibilans (Order Ophidia), Tarentola annularis (Order Squamata and Crocodylus niloticus (Order Crocodylia) are used in the present study. Their tongue is removed and examined morphologically. Their lingual mucosa examined under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as processed for histological investigation. Gross morphological studies revealed variations of tongue gross structure being elongated with bifurcated end in P. sibilans or triangular flattened structure with broad base and conical free border in T. annularis or rough triangular fill almost the floor cavity in C. niloticus. At SEM, the lingual mucosa showed fine striated grooves radially arranged in oblique extension with missing of lingual papillae. Numerous microridges are detected above the cell surfaces in P. sibilans. T. annularis exhibited arrangement of conical flattened filiform papillae and abundant of microridges. However in C. niloticus, the lingual mucosa possessed different kinds of filiform papillae besides gustatory papillae and widespread arrangement of taste buds. Histologically, confirmed SEM of illustrating the lingual mucosa protrusion of stratified squamous epithelium in P. sibilans and presence of apical taste buds in conical filiform papillae of T. annularis. The lingual mucosa of C. niloticus revealed different forms of both filiform and gustatory papillae.


En el presente estudio fueron utilizados tres diferentes especies de reptiles Psammophis sibilans (Orden Ophidia), Tarentola annularis (Orden Squamata y Crocodylus niloticus (Orden Crocodylia). Sus lenguas fueron removidas y examinadas morfológicamente. Las mucosas linguales se examinaron bajo microscopio electrónico de barrido (SEM) y también procesadas para la investigación histológica. El estudio morfológico macroscópico reveló variaciones de la estructura de la lengua, siendo éstas alargadas con el extremo bifurcado en P. sibilans o de estructura triangular aplanada con una base amplia y el borde libre cónico en T. annularis o triangular rugosa llenando casi todo el suelo de la cavidad en C. niloticus. En el SEM, la mucosa lingual mostró finas ranuras estriadas dispuestas radialmente en la extensión oblicua con pérdida de las papilas linguales. Numerosas microcrestas fueron detectadas por encima de la superficie de las células en P. sibilans. T. annularis exhibiendo una disposición de papilas filiformes cónicas aplanadas y abundante de microcrestas. Sin embargo, en C. niloticus, la mucosa lingual posee diferentes tipos de papilas filiformes además de papilas gustativas con una extensa disposición de corpúsculos gustativas. Histológicamente, mediante confirmación de SEM se ilustra la protrusión del epitelio escamoso estratificado de la mucosa lingual en P. sibilans y la presencia de corpúsculos gustativos apicales en las papilas filiformes cónicas de T. annularis. La mucosa lingual de C. niloticus reveló diferentes formas de ambas papilas, filiformes y gustativas.

ABSTRACT

A criação de jacaré-do-Pantanal tem se consolidado no estado de Mato Grosso como atividade alternativa e legal para as propriedades rurais na área de ocorrência natural da espécie, coibindo a caça predatória e colaborando na preservação da espécie. A racionalização do processo produtivo na criação de jacaré é uma ação relativamente nova, que permite obter pele de melhor qualidade e de utilização integral, diferentemente daquelas oriundas de animais da natureza. Considerando a importância dos intestinos como sede dos principais eventos relacionados à obtenção de nutrientes para o metabolismo corpóreo, este trabalho teve por objetivo caracterizar qualitativa e quantitativamente a mucosa dos intestinos delgado e grosso de jacaré-do-Pantanal jovens. Para a caracterização ao microscópio óptico da estrutura da parede intestinal e da histometria da mucosa foram coletadas amostras intestinais de 16 animais, sendo três deles também destinados ao estudo histoquímico. As amostras foram obtidas de cinco regiões, sendo quatro do intestino delgado e uma do intestino grosso. Elas foram fixadas em solução de Bouin, processadas de acordo com técnicas preconizadas para inclusão em parafina. Cortes histológicos semi-seriados (quatro micrômetros) foram obtidos e o material foi desparafinizado, hidratado e corado pela hematoxilina-eosina para a descrição geral e estudo histométrico, que consistiu da mensuração da freqüência das vilosidades intestinais; dos comprimentos do epitélio e da lâmina própria da mucosa e da espessura da mucosa. Na análise estatística foi empregada a análise de variância e Teste de Tukey. Para o estudo histoquímico foram utilizadas a reação ao ácido periódico de Schiff, alcian blue pH 1,0 contrastado com hematoxilina e alcian blue pH 2,5 conjugado ao ácido periódico de Schiff. Para a descrição das estruturas histológicas foi empregada a terminologia disponível na Nomina Histologia. A estrutura da parede do intestino delgado e grosso do jacaré-do-Pantanal era constituída pelas túnicas mucosa, muscular e serosa. A mucosa era formada por epitélio de revestimento do tipo cilíndrico simples constituído por epiteliócitos colunares e por exocrinócitos caliciformes; lâmina própria de tecido conjuntivo frouxo e muscular da mucosa única. A túnica muscular era constituída por dois estrados, o circular e o longitudinal, sendo o estrato circular o mais desenvolvido. A serosa era típica. As especializações da mucosa observadas no intestino delgado e grosso, respectivamente, foram vilosidades e pregas intestinais, e ao longo das regiões dos intestinos, apresentaram diminuição de sua complexidade. O estudo histométrico da mucosa demonstrou diferença estatisticamente significante entre o intestino delgado e grosso. Embora a estrutura da parede intestinal de C. yacare seja semelhante à de outros crocodilianos, a da tartaruga verde e avestruz, ainda se faz necessário estudos sobre a histofisiologia para que o manejo nutricional da espécie em cativeiro seja incrementado.


Commercial breeding of Caiman yacare has been consolidated in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, as an alternative and legal activity for rural properties in the area of its natural occurrence, to restrain predatory hunting and for preservation of the species. Rationalization of the production process in alligator breading is a relatively new action, which allows a better skin quality and integral use, different from the production of skins from animals in nature. Considering the importance of the intestines as being the main place of the major events related to nutrients obtainment for the body metabolism, this study aimed to characterize qualitative and quantitatively the mucosa of the small and large intestine of young C. yacare. For the characterization of the intestinal wall structure in optical microscopy and histometry of the mucosa were collected intestinal samples from 16 animals, three of which were also used for the histochemical study. The samples were obtained from five regions, four from the small intestine and one from the large intestine. They were fixed in Bouin solution and processed according to the techniques recommended for paraffin inclusion. Semiserial histological sections (about four micrometers) were obtained and the specimen was deparaffinized, hydrated, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin for the general description and histometric study, which consisted of measuring the frequency of intestinal villi, lengths of epithelium and lamina propria of the mucosa, and mucosal thickness. In the statistical analysis was applied the variance analysis and Tukey test. For the histochemistry study were used the reaction to periodic acid-Schiff, alcian blue pH 1.0 counterstained with hematoxylin and alcian blue pH 2.5 conjugated to the periodic acid-Schiff. For description of the histological structures was used the terminology available in the Histological Nomina .The wall structure of the small and large intestine of the C. yacare was formed by mucosa, muscular and serosa tunics. The mucosal consisted of lining epithelium type simple cylindrical formed by columnar epithelial cells and goblet cells; lamina propria of loose connective tissue and a single layer of muscularis mucosa. The muscular tunic consisted of two stratums, the circular and the longitudinal, being the circular stratum more developed. The serosa was typical. The specializations of the mucosa observed in the small and large intestines respectively, were intestinal villi and folds, and along the regions of the intestines, showed a reduction of its complexity. The histometric study of the mucosa showed statistically significant difference between the small and large intestines. Although the structure of the intestinal wall of C. yacareis similar to other crocodilians, the green turtle and the ostrich, it's still necessary studies about the histophysiology that the nutritional management of the species in captivity be incremented.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the digestive system of Caiman crocodilus, Melanosuchus niger and Paleosuchus palpebrosus based on anatomical and topographical inferences. The study involves two digestive systems of C. crocodilus, one of M. niger and one of P. palpebrosus, already fixed in 10 percent formaldehyde, belonging to the collection of the Wild Animal Research Laboratory (LAPAS) of the Federal University of Uberlândia. The work begins with a description of the digestive system of the aforementioned crocodilians, followed by topographical associations, aided by photographs taken with a SONY® DSC-H20 camera, X-rays of the gastrointestinal tract and a photograph of the digestive system of C. crocodilus prior to formaldehyding, which also belong to the LAPAS collection. The results indicate that the digestive system of crocodilians consists of a wide mouth, short pharynx, long straight esophagus, dilated stomach in relation to the rest of the tract, pancreas lodged between the first two ventral duodenal loops, coiled small intestine, large intestine with diameter larger than the preceding segments, and cloaca as the terminal portion of the digestive, urinary and reproductive systems. The anatomical and topographical description of the digestive system of C. crocodilus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Crocodylia: Alligatoridae), M. niger (Spix, 1825) (Crocodylia: Alligatoridae) and P. palpebrosus (Cuvier, 1807) (Crocodylia: Alligatoridae) can be extended to the other crocodilians due to interspecies and intraspecific behavioral similarities.


Mediante comparaciones anatómicas y topográficas describimos el sistema digestivo de C. crocodillus, M. nigeri y P. palpebrosus. Se utilizaron dos sistemas digestivos de C. crocodillus, uno de M. nigeri y uno de P. palpebrosus, fijados en formalina al 10 por ciento y pertenecientes al laboratorio de enseñanza e investigación de fauna silvestre (LAPAS) de la Universidade Federal de Uberlândia. En primera instancia se realizó la descripción del sistema digestivo de las mencionadas especies, seguido de comparaciones topográficas. Luego, fueron tomados registros fotográficos con cámara DSC H20 SONY. Adicional a esto, nos apoyamos con radiografías del tracto gastrointestinal y fotografías del sistema digestivo de C. crocodillus antes de ser fijados en formalina. Los resultados demuestraron que el sistema digestivo de estas tres especies de caimanes está constituido por una boca grande, faringe corta, esófago alargado y rectilíneo, estómago dilatado con relación a las otras partes del tracto digestivo, páncreas alojado entre las dos primeras curvaturas duodenales ventrales, intestino delgado plegado, intestino grueso con un diámetro mayor en relación a los segmentos anteriores y una cloaca donde también terminan los sistemas urinarios y reproductor. La descripción anatómica y topográfica del sistema digestivo de C. crocodillus, M. niger y P. palpebrosus puede ser extrapolada para otros cocodrilos por la semejanza comportamental interespecies e intraespecíficas.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to describe and systematize the encephalic arterial vascularization of this reptile,by providing a standard irrigation model with its major variations. Thirty broad-snouted caiman heads andtwo whole specimens were used. The arterial system was filled with red-colored latex. Only a single source ofblood supply was observed in caimans and it originated from the left aortic arch. This vessel is called the azygoscarotid artery. At the caudal base of the skull, ventral to the first cervical vertebrae, it divided into two internalcarotid arteries. The internal carotid arteries divided into a rostral branch and a short caudal branch at thehypophysis level, which continued naturally as the caudal cerebral artery. The short caudal branch gave off itsmedium-caliber portion which, gave off the mesencephalic and the ventral rostral cerebellar arteries. Then thiscaudal branch anastomosed with its contralateral counterpart, forming the basilar artery. This artery followedthe ventral median fissure of the medulla oblongata, giving off the ventral caudal cerebellar and dorsal spinalarteries, and abandoning the cranial cavity through the foramen magnum as the ventral spinal artery. Therostral branch gave off the middle cerebral, rostral cerebral and rostral communicating arteries. The middlecerebral artery arose from a network originated from one to five collateral branches of the rostral branch of theinternal carotid artery. It was observed that the cerebral arterial circle was rostrally and caudally closed and,therefore, the cerebral blood supply was exclusively made by the carotid system.

ABSTRACT

The determination of embryonic stages is very useful in comparative and evolutionary anatomy, experimentalresearch and ecological studies. Although tables of development stages already exist for some crocodilianspecies, no table has yet been published for Melanosuchus niger. Therefore, the aim of this work is to monitorthe development of this species of Alligatoridae and characterize its stages based on the main morphologicaltransformations the embryo undergoes during the incubation process. Under natural conditions, two sampleswere collected daily in the Lake Cuniã Extractive Reserve in Rondônia, Brazil, making a total of 186 eggs.The incubation period was 90 days at an ambient temperature varying from 25.2 to 31.7 °C. We established24 embryonic stages between the formation of the pharyngeal arch and hatching. Primordia for the sensoryorgans and somites were observed in the early stages. The buds of the pelvic and thoracic limbs emergedsimultaneously, also in the early stages. An analysis of these structures showed evidence of considerableevolutionary modifications when compared with embryos of different species. In stage 12 we observed subtlepigmentation in the region of the head and, in stage 25, the pigmentation and striped pattern were typical ofthe newly hatched specimen. The eyetooth was visible in stage 18, disappearing within the first few weeks afterhatching. The vitellus was completely absorbed in the penultimate stage. Direct comparisons of the table ofembryonic stages were made between M. niger and other crocodilian taxa, and the main differences identifiedwere chronological variations.

ABSTRACT

Ten caimans (Caiman latirostris and Caiman yacare) of different length and live weight were slaughtered to assess carcass yield and meat quality traits. Carcass yield was 54% while meat portion was the 62%. The carcass meat/bone ratio was approximately 1,51 while the 6,4% corresponded to the fat depots, mostly visceral depots. The tail cut represented the 27,4% of the carcass weight and it was composed 21,9% by meat and the 5,5% of bone. The meat tail pH postsmortem value (6,88 ±0,22) fell up to 6,49 (±0,23), 24 hs after slaughtering and 5,85 (±0,12) after thawing. Cookinglosses were low (<0,3%) and the Warner Bratzler shear force had values lower than 3kg. The raw tail color analyses characterized the meat as luminous (L *= 67,7) and pale (C*= 5,5). While the fat content changed significantly depending on the tive weight (2,5-29,8%DM), the protein content was relatively constant and around the 65% of dry matter. From the total intramuscular fatty acid content of tail meat, the 41,4 % were satured, the 39,1 % were monounsatured and the 10,7% were polyunsatured, with a n-6/ n-3 ratio near the optimum (3,16 vs 4). The oleic acid was the most important FA foLlowed by the palmitic, stearic and Moleic acids. Among the unsatured FA, the levels of essential FA as araquidonic (4,34) and n-3 derived family were important (EPA= 0,76 and DHA= 0,57). Another positive nutritional characteristic was the high level of CLA (1,87%FAtot).


Dez jacarés (Caiman latirostris ou jacaré -de-papo amarelo e Caiman jacaré) de diferentes comprimentos e pesos vivos foram carneados com o fim de determinar valores de rendimento de carcaça e qualidade da carne. O rendimento de carcaça foi de 54% correspondendo um 62% a porção cárnea. A relação Carne/ Osso da carcaça se estimou em aproximadamente 1,51 enquanto que 6,4% correspondeu a depósitos gordurosos, fundamentalmente periviscerais. O rabo representou 27,4% do peso de carcaça estando composta por 21,9% de carne e 5,5% de osso. O valor de pH post mortem, 6,88 ± 0,22 medido no rabo, decresceu até 6,49 ± 0,23 às 24h e 5,85 ± 0,12 logo de descongelamento. As perdas de cocção se contiveram (<0,3%) e a dureza Warner Bratzler mostrou valores inferiores a 3 kg. A análise da cor da carne crua permite caracterizá-la como una carne luminosa (L*=67,7) e clara (C*= 5,5). Enquanto que o conteúdo gorduroso variou significativamente em função do peso (2,5-29,8%MS), a porcentagem protéica foi relativamente constante e próxima a 65%MS. Do total de ácidos gorduroso do rabo, 41,4% foram saturados, 39,1 % monoinsaturados e 10,7% poliinsaturados, com uma relação n-6/n-¬3 próxima a ótimo (3,16). O ácido gorduroso foi o predominante seguido pelos ácidos palmitico, esteárico y linoléico. Dentro dos insaturados, foi elevado o conteúdo de ácidos gordurosos essenciáis= araquidônico (4,34) e família n-3 (EPA=0,76 e DHA=0,57); a esta característica nutritiva positiva se soma o alto conteúdo em CLA (1 , 87%Agtot).

ABSTRACT

Com o objetivo de estudar o sistema hematopoético do réptil Caiman crocodilus yacare, foram utilizados cinco exemplares hígidos e jovens (aproximadamente um ano de idade), provenientes de São Paulo e de Mato Grosso do Sul. Amostras de sangue periférico foram colhidas em EDTA, através da punção do seio venoso cervical, e da medula óssea por punção aspirativa do osso femural. Estudo histológico da medula óssea femural foi realizado através da coloração por HE, Giemsa e técnica de Gomori para fibras reticulínicas. Os esfregaços de sangue e de medula foram processados para coloração panótica (Leishman ou Rosenfeld). A presença de sítios hematopoéticos ativos foi demonstrada histologicamente nos cortes transversais do fêmur, principalmente no terço distal. As células da linhagem eritrocítica foram encontradas dentro dos vasos capilares sinusóides medulares, na região central do osso. As células precursoras desta linhagem estavam aderidas à parede do vaso, e suas sucessoras distribuídas em direção ao centro do sinusóide à medida que amadureciam. Nos esfregaços de medula, as células imaturas da linhagem eritrocítica mostraram-se arredondadas e com núcleo predominantemente frouxo, em contraposição às células maduras, de núcleo condensado e forma em geral elíptica. Foram vistos pró-eritroblastos, eritroblastos basofílicos, policromáticos e ortocromáticos, e finalmente eritrócitos.

In the present study regression equations are established between broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) captive reproductive females snout-vent length (SVL) and body mass (BM) and the following clutch characteristics: egg mass, egg "length" (maximal diameter), egg "width" (minimal diameter), hatchling BM, hatchling SVL, clutch size (number of eggs), clutch mass and relative clutch mass (clutch mass/female BM). Female body-length presented a positive correlation with egg mass, egg length, egg width, hatchling BM and hatchling SVL. No clear correlation was found between female SVL and clutch size. Female BM showed a significantly positive correlation with egg mass, egg-length, egg-width, hatchling BM, hatchling SVL and clutch mass. A highly significant negative correlation was found between female BM and the relative clutch mass. No clear correlation was found between female BM and clutch size

ABSTRACT

The variation in degrees of interdigitation (complexity) in cranial sutures among species of Caiman in different skull regions was studied by fractal analysis. Our findings show that there is a small species effect in the fractal dimension of cranial sutures, but most variation is accounted for by regional differentiation within the skull. There is also a significant interaction between species and cranial regions. The braincase sutures show higher fractal dimension than the facial skull sutures for all three species. The fractal dimension of nasal-maxilla suture is larger in Caiman latirostris than in the other species. The braincase sutures show higher fractal dimensions in C. sclerops than in the other species. The results suggest that different regions of the skull in caimans are under differential functional stress and the braincase sutures must counteract stronger disarticulation forces than the facial sutures. The larger fractal dimension shown by C. latirostris in facial sutures has probably a functional basis also. Caiman latirostris is known to have preferences for harder food items than the other species

In the present study, regression equations between body and head length measurements for the broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) are presented. Age and sex are discussed as sources of variation for allometric models. Four body-length, fourteen head-length, and ten ratio variables were taken from wild and captive animals. With the exception of body mass, log-transformation did not improve the regression equations. Besides helping to estimate body-size from head dimensions, the regression equations stressed skull shape changes during the ontogenetic process. All age-dependent variables are also size-dependent (and consequently dependent on growth rate), which is possibly related to the difficulty in predicting age of crocodilians based on single variable growth curves. Sexual dimorphism was detected in the allometric growth of cranium but not in the mandible, which may be evolutionarily related to the visual recognition of gender when individuals exhibit only the top of their heads above the surface of the water, a usual crocodilian behavior

Com o objetivo de estudar o sistema hematopoético do réptil da espécie Caiman crocodilus yacare, foram utilizados cinco exemplares hígidos e jovens (aproximadamente um ano de idade), provenientes de São Paulo e de Mato Grosso do Sul. Amostras de sangue periférico foram colhidas em EDTA, através da punção do seio venoso cervical, e da medula óssea pela punção aspirativa do osso femural. Estudo histológico da medula óssea femural foi realizado em um animal, através da coloração em HE, Giemsa e pela técnica de Gomori para fibras reticulínicas. Os esfregaços de sangue e de medula foram processados para coloração panótica (Leishman ou Rosenfeld) e reações citoquímicas para fosfatase alcalina, peroxidase e azul de toluidina. O material de medula óssea foi também processado para estudo ultra-estrutural em Microscopia Eletrônica de Transmissão, pelo método clássico e com o emprego de reações citoquímicas (fosfatase alcalina e peroxidase). A presença de sítios hematopoéticos ativos foi demonstrada histologicamente nos cortes transversais do fêmur, principalmente no seu terço distal. As células leucocitárias imaturas foram localizadas no espaço extravascular da região subendosteal, enquanto as da linhagem eritrocítica foram encontradas dentro dos vasos capilares sinusóides medulares, na região central do osso. As células precursoras desta linhagem estavam aderidas à parede do vaso, e suas sucessoras distribuídas em direção ao centro do sinusóide à medida que amadureciam. Nos esfregaços de medula, as células imaturas da linhagem eritrocítica mostraram-se arredondadas e com núcleo predominantemente frouxo, em contraposição às células maduras, de núcleo condensado e forma em geral elíptica. Foram vistos pró-eritroblastos, eritroblastos basofilicos, policromáticos e ortocromáticos, e finalmente eritrócitos. As células precursoras da linhagem granulocítica foram grandes e diminuíam progressivamente com a diferenciação. Os grânulos específicos surgiram a partir da fase de mielócito inicial, aumentando com a maturação celular. O núcleo foi excêntrico e de cromatina frouxa nas fases mais imaturas, tomando-se esférico com o avançar da diferenciação no caso do eosimófilo e do heterófilo, porém ocupando posição central no basófllo.
